Since 1886 the museum has collected documents about the mineral and cultural richness of the region. The most attractive exposition is the department of geology, palaeontology and mineralogy documenting the development of the lifeless nature of Český ráj (the Bohemian Paradise). The jewel of that exposition is a unique systematic collection of precious stones and decorative stones from the whole world that belongs among the largest ones in Europe. The exposition was newly completed by interactive elements and video-projection, a novelty are also aquariums with sea animals. Linking up to the mineralogical exposition is the exhibition of stones-working and jewel-making and the garnet treasury with a quantity of historic jewels. Every year, in July, the museum organizes the international jewellers‘ symposium the results of which enrich the collections of modern jewels. The event is accompanied by creative workshops where under the supervision of experts the visitors may try washing for garnets and olivines, finding agates, their cutting and grinding.
For centuries Czech garnet has been the national precious stone. Since the 14th century already magical and curative power has been adjudged to garnets; they were used in liturgical and world jewels, they decorated the robes of the monarchs, goblets, monstrances, reliquaries and arms, valuablejewels were made ofthem. Družstvo umělecké výroby Granát (Cooperative of Art Manufacture Garnet) that concentrates and educates stone cutters, goldsmiths and silversmiths from Turnov and the surroundings originated in 1953. It is the continuator of the hundred years tradition of manufacture of jewels and cutting precious stones in Český ráj (the Bohemian Paradise), at the same time, it is also the single owner of the mine where Czech garnets are mined. Granát exports a wide assortment of gold and silver jewels to different states of Europe, America and Japan. Serving to the customers are ten shops all over the Czech Republic, apart from that, the DUV Granát organizes regularly, in cooperation with the museum of Český ráj (the Bohemian Paradise), meetings of stone-cut-ters, mineralogical exchanges and jewellers‘ symposiums.
